The 1966-67 season was going to be the first season to have a Super Bowl. It was going to be played by the winner of the NFL vs the winner of the AFL. The Atlanta Falcons joined the NFL and expanded the league to 15 teams. The NFL was spilt into two different conference only and only one playoff round was played. The Green Bay Packers had the best record in the NFL and in the Western Conference going 12-2. The Kansas City Chiefs finished with the best record in the AFL going 11-2-1.
On January 15 1967, the first ever Super bowl was held between the winner of the NFL and AFL. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34-27 in the NFL Championship game. The Kansas City Chiefs destroyed the Buffalo Bills 31-7 to move on to the first Super Bowl. theThe AFL champions were no match for the NFL champions as the Packers won 35-10 to claim the very first Super Bowl, although it wasn’t called Super Bowl I until several years later. The Chiefs actually had the game within 4 going into halftime, but they were not able to score any points in the second half and the Packers put up 21 unanswered points in the second half to blow the game open. Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr earned MVP honors by completing 16 passes for 250 yards, 2 touchdowns and one interception.
