The 1980-81 season was the 35th for the NBA and the Dallas Mavericks became the 23rd franchise in the NBA. The Boston Celtics led by head coach Bill Fitch led the Celtics to the best record in the NBA. The Celtics won 62 games and lost 20 games during the season and went 35-6 at home. Larry Bird was selected to the All-NBA First Team, and teammate Kevin McHale was selected to the All-NBA Rookie Team. Nate Archibald also from the Celtics won the NBA All-Star game MVP award. Julius Erving of the Philadelphia 76ers was announced as the league’s MVP.
After finishing the regular season as the top team, the Boston Celtics kept the hot streak going through the playoffs to make their way to the NBA Finals. The Celtics took on the Houston Rockets who only won 40 games during the regular season and lost 42. In game one the Celtics won 98-95, Bird was one assist away from a triple-double. Bird had 18 points, 21 boards and 9 assist. In game six the Celtics closed the Rockets out with a 102-91 victory. Bird scored 27 points and had 13 boards, and teammate Cedric Maxwell was announced as the finals MVP after the game. Maxwell averaged 17.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
