The Lakers won 65 games and lost 17, with the best record the Lakers clinched the number one seed in the Western Conference and they won the Pacific Division. Magic Johnson led the league in assists averaging 12.2 per game. Johnson went on to win the NBAs MVP award and was selected to the All-NBA First Team. Teammate Michael Cooper won the Defensive Player of the Year award and was announced to the NBA All-Defensive First Team.

The Lakers started out strong as they took the first two games of the series. In game two, the Lakers won 141 to 122 with Michael Cooper making six out of seven threes, and Bryon Scott led the team with 24 points. In game six, the Lakers closed the series out with a 106-93 victory. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led the team with 32 points on the night and Magic Johnson was announced as the finals MVP. Johnson averaged 26.2 points, 8 rebounds and 13 assists per game.
