The 1987-88 Los Angeles Lakers entered the NBA season as the defending NBA Champions. Head coach Pat Riley guaranteed the Lakers would repeat as NBA Champions. To make good on that promise, the Lakers finished the NBA with the best record in the NBA going 62-20 to clinch the number one seed in the playoffs, and they won the Pacific Division. Three of the Lakers stars were selected to the NBA All-Star game, Magic Johnson, James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The head coach Pat Riley was also announced as the coach for the West All-Star team.
The Los Angeles Lakers continued to make good on Riley’s comment on them repeating as champions by making it back to the finals. They would take on the Eastern Conference Champions the Detroit Pistons. The Lakers tied the series 1-1 in game two. Trying to not lose two in a row at home, Magic, Worthy and Byron Scott all had over 20 points in a 108-96 win. The series would go back in fourth, but the Lakers closed the deal in game seven. The Pistons lost 108-105 after Isiah Thomas got knocked to the ground while shooting the game tying three. James Worthy ended game seven with a triple-double 36 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists and was named the finals MVP.
