The Pistons entered their 41st season in the NBA and their 32nd season playing in Detroit. Before the season started, the Pistons would be playing their home games in a new arena, the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Pistons were looking to make their way back to the NBA Finals after losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the finals last season. The Pistons finished the NBA with the best record in the going 63-19 to clinch the number one seed in the Eastern Conference and they won the Central Division. Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers was named the NBA’s MVP.

The Lakers lost two of their best players, first it was Byron Scott in game one then Magic Johnson in game two. The Pistons went on to sweep the Lakers and cost the Lakers from winning three straight championships. In the close out game the Pistons won 105-97, Joe Dumars led the Pistons with 23 points and James Worthy scored 40 for the Lakers but needed more help. Dumars was announced as the finals MVP averaging 27.3 points per game.
