In the 2002-03 season, the NFL expanded to 32 NFL teams with the Houston Texans coming in the league. With the Texans expanding in the NFL, the NFL realigned the NFL into eight divisions that included four teams in each of them. The Texans were added in the AFC South with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans. The Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers would finished 12-4 for the best record in NFC. The Eagles had a better conference record and received the number one seed. In the AFC the Oakland Raiders finished 11-5 to earn the number one seed in the AFC. Rich Gannon, the QB of the Raiders, was named MVP.
The Raiders and the Buccaneers would battle on January 26, 2003 in San Diego, California. The Raiders would beat down the Titans 41-24 in the AFC Championship game to move on to Super Bowl 37. The Buccaneers took down the Eagles 27-10 in the NFC Championship game. Super Bowl 37 also known as the “pirate bowl” due to both teams pirate-theme names, featured the number one offense (Raiders) against the number one defense (Buccaneers). The Buccaneers defense was too much for the Raiders as they went on to win their first Super Bowl 48-21. The Buccaneers defense forced MVP QB to throw five interceptions, three were returned for touchdowns. Safety Dexter Jackson, was named the Super Bowl MVP. Jackson had two of the teams five interceptions.
