The Miami Heat entered their 18th NBA season in 2005-06. Stan Van Gundy started the year as head coach, but after starting the season 11-10, Gundy left his job. The president of the team Pat Riley took over the coaching duties of the team. The 2005-06 season was the second season with Dwyane Wade and Shaq playing together. Last season, where they first played together, they won 59 games. This season the Heat only won 52 games, but dealt with injuries during the season, and they still clinched the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Miami Heat made their way to the NBA Finals led by Dwyane Wade and Shaq. They were looking to win the Heat’s first title as they took on the Dallas Mavericks. The 2006 finals were the first finals in history for both of the teams. The Mavericks took the first two games to go up 2-0, but the Heat responded in game three. Wade led the team with 42 points and helped the Heat come back from a 13-point deficit with less than six minutes remaining in the game. The Heat went on to win the next three, winning their first title. Wade had 36-points in the close out game and was announced as the MVP of the Finals averaging 34.7 points per game.
